Isn't it ironic that TD is the pariah (being a major Canadian Bank that is HQ'd in a country where banking regulations and standards are considered conservative, relative to the US banking industry)?

As it's said, America innovates and Europe regulates. Applied to "AI Safety", one should not expect self-regulation by the commercial, industrial bodies. The Governing bodies that are tasked with the protection of society (and to some extend shaping the value systems for society and its' culture therein), should be leading the analysis and regulation of AI Safety.

Given the recent history of massive over-hiring of staff and subsequent downsizing (Meta, Amazon, Google, etc) where the new-hires reported weak work assignments, I don't think a measurement of staffing levels in AI Safety Dept's is adequate. There does need to be research and policy consultation in order to build some framework of instrumentation that can qualitatively measure what safety is, and how it can be regulated/enforced.

“AI safety” will continue to be meaningless until we begin to realize and measure the potential detrimental impacts on the spectrum of humanity’s existence. For example, does the use of AI generated content based on social media attention algorithms increase teen suicide rates?
